Default How to use the IS DBK planet imager + Debayering

Hi all.

It's come to my attention that these particular colour one shot cams are quite difficult to work out when first picked up. I can certainly relate to this. When first using my newly purchased DBK21AU04.AS 4 years ago, I was confused about the long list of available codec's & options etc. So this is a quick guide on how to use one, based on my (still limited) experiences from the last 4 years.

The new DBK21AU618.AS is still exactly the same to run as the old DBK21AU04.AS using IC Capture, the default capture software supplied with the cam. Different settings will of course be employed due to the new chip's sensitivity.

A bit about the camera.

Color Interpolation.

For visualization applications, it does not make sense to view the RAW image stream from the CCD chip. It must be interpolated, before it may be viewed or saved in common formats. IC Capture.AS perform color interpolation, thus reducing the load on the DBK 21AF04.AS's processor. Should, on the other hand, you prefer that the camera itself performs color interpolation, you can select the appropriate option in IC Capture.AS. This enables the transfer of data to reach the camera's maximum of 60 FPS. Finally, if you do not require color interpolation at all, you can turn it off completely and the image stream is written to disk in RAW format.

The camera does not have an IR cut filter, a color filter, nor an other kind of electronic filter. The camera is therefore ideally suited to capturing very true-to-life images of the night sky.

Lets elaborate on a few of those above comments derived directly from TIS.

First off, shooting in Y800 + Y800 gives you true RAW, true uncompressed. There's no other way to describe it. Bear in mind, the AVI will be close to twice the size (above 2 GIG) than if you use the capture program/camera to interpolate for you. You'll also need a high BUS speed to capture at true 60FPS in RAW mode. I should add, I'm using the USB version - Don't have any other USB device plugged in other than a mouse! You may be sorry if you do Loss of communication with the cam can be the result.

Indeed, the DBK does not have a filter of any kind. This is the best scenerio for capturing true colour balanced planet images BUT it will need an IR/UV cut filter of some description to stop colour smearing at anything under 45 degrees target elevation. I use a Baader IR/UV cut screw-on type filter. Works for me.

Ok. Once you have installed the cam/capture program/driver for your cam, here's what comes next.

Unplug the cam & RESTART the computer!!

Plug your cam in after restart. wait until you hear the chimes - If no audio, wait 20 seconds. Startup IC capture. Sometimes IC Cap. won't show you all the available toolbars for this cam by default. If it doesn't, refer to the screenshot on how to find the option & click on "show all supported toolbars".

If you do want to shoot "in the RAW" Here's what you'll see. Take note of the codecs etc. Y800 input + Y800 codec with debayering disenabled. Sorry I couldn't be out there capturing a planet doing this tutorial, so you'll have to use your imagination.

Take note of screen capture two to find the input dropdown menu. Choose Y800.

If you DO want to use some another codec/input combo. this is the one worth shooting in/with: YUY2 + unspecified. Bear in mind you will be limited to 30FPS maximum in this mode. Not a problem with the old DBK - Couldn't use 60FPS anyway! (a lil' dig at TIS here..) Lovely results with this combination will be had! Colour results straight up the pipe with no need to debayer.

The list of available codecs.

Try them all by all means, however the best results will be had by uncompressed RAW. Remember uncompressed means Y800 input + codec Y800 debayer not enabled.

Ok, enough about codecs!

Onto stage two.

Get your target on the live feed. Focus at your nominated image scale derived from the seeing at the time. If using 60FPS + 1/60th sec. exp. (Don't use any slower than 1/60th sec. exp.) Use default gamma (100). Enable debayering. The live feed will now display a colour image. To solve the problem of colour balance manually, tick the auto function. This will give you a very nice colour balance with the 618 - Even more so than the old cam for some reason..

Adjust your gain settings so it looks similar to this histogram display. Keep just under the burnout stage in the central regions of IE Jupiter.

With debayering enabled, choose BG (green + blue) to get a true colour image. The same can be said for debayering in any software - BG. Edit: EXCEPT registax - the writers of said program have it backwards..GB rather than BG.

Ok once you have everything right (mainly colour balance) flip back to RAW (debayering off) Make sure focus is nice & start capturing.

Onto part 3 - Debayering (getting the colour info back into the data).

There are several ways of doing this: Use Registax.

Here we have the yet to be debayered data in Registax. Refer to this to find the debayering function in Registax6. Choose GB NOT BG in registax..Located under 'show prefilter'
