Announcement Simply Amazing

Here is a link to a work in progress by Steve "Qakka" Quirk

As can be seen, Qakka is not only a highly skilled ATM but also a master of innovation, but the best is last. Read through the whole article, its worth the effort trust me. Now how about that lunar image taken with a P&S camera and a bare glass mirror primary!!!!!!

Go Qak!!!!

Hi Vin

Yeah.. bloody amazing isn't it!
It's no great secret that a telescopes potential performance can be shown even with an uncoated (aluminised (aluminzed for our US buddies) mirror but rather the prefigured pyrex glass on its own. Isn't it wonderful how we can still (even in this state) focus an image at the eyepiece and even photograph it as Qakka has demonstrated. But, it is an unoften demonstrated reality as demonstrated clearly here. A great posting for AH.

Cheers
Massoid

Yes. When I was 13 my father & I ground our own 8" mirror & I used it unaluminized for about 4 months before I saved up enough pocket money to get the aluminizing done! I remember seeing Jupiter & saturn & of course the moon - amazingly bright.

Oh yes John.

Its nothing new to test a mirror before Aluminium Coating, but its something you don't see much any more.

The two big things here that come home to me, however, are first off the same old thing about mirror cleaning/pampering. Bare glass works. So lets not get freaked about a bit of dust on our mirrors.

The second is that bare glass and a most basic camera can achieve an acceptable image. Sure its a big bright Moon, but I've seen a lot worse taken with some pretty exotic gear.

Very nice indeed. I wish I had the energy and knowhow to make a mirror larger than the one I have now.

I guess I'm still too much of a rookie, Ted. My first thought when reading your comment was....why would you want to
get a an even bigger ladder? If you do ever make a bigger one, and no longer require the current mirror, please be
sure to contact the Dizzygazer Used Mirror Disposal Co. ...

Incredible work there by Qakka, and I thought the image was quite good, with some very nice definition of surface
features.

Lovely recollection Mr.Azimov of the father & son first telescope project. I'm sure these days their would be few among us who could recount such a thing. While I doubt my father could have understaken such an arduous task, he did buy me my first telescope (a 40mm ) Amasco I think it was.. I'm still amazed today that it led to a life time interest given most kids start with a 6 or 8-inch newtonian these days and still find the hobby boring compared to a Sony Play Station.
